Inkjet wins for paper, photo printing, and anything where color range matters more than durability. It's cheaper per page for low volumes. But inkjet ink can smudge, fade, and it doesn't adhere well to plastics or metals.

Laser wins for speed, precision, and permanent marks. A fiber laser can mark stainless steel in seconds with zero consumables — no ink, no ribbons, no cartridges. For industrial applications, laser is almost always the right call.

Where it gets tricky: rush jobs on mixed materials. I had a client in March 2024 who needed 500 branded metal water bottles and 500 printed certificates in 36 hours. Normal turnaround for both was five days. We ran the bottles on a JPT 60W MOPA and the certificates on a high-speed inkjet. Two workflows, one deadline. It worked, but only because we had both machines in-house.

3. What's actually in a T-shirt printing machine starter kit?

Depends on the kit. Most include a heat press, some transfer materials, and either a small laser engraver or a basic inkjet printer for transfer sheets.

4. Are all-in-one laser printers worth it?

For a home office? Maybe. For a production environment? No.

All-in-one machines try to do everything — print, scan, copy, fax (who faxes?), and sometimes mark or engrave. They compromise on each function.

In my role coordinating rush orders, I can't afford a machine that does five things at 70% quality. When a client needs 200 engraved metal tags in 24 hours, I need a dedicated fiber laser that runs at 100% and doesn't jam because someone used it to scan a document.

7. What should I verify before buying a JPT laser source for rush work?

Three things, in order:

First, power at the material. A 60W JPT source doesn't mean 60W of cutting power on every material. Ask for real-world marking speed data on your specific substrate. If the vendor can't provide it, that's a red flag.

Second, spare parts availability. Ask where the replacement modules ship from. If the answer is "overseas, 7-10 days," you're one failure away from a missed deadline. Find a distributor with regional stock.

Third, run a timed test. Send them your material. Ask for a video of the machine marking it at production speed. I've caught three vendors who quoted unrealistic cycle times this way. Saved us from buying equipment that couldn't hit our throughput targets.
